Capitol One Bank, Babylon NYMINEOLA, NY—The American Institute of Architects' Long Island Chapter honored JRS Architect, P.C., for architectural excellence, awarding the design firm two Archi Awards. The Archis reflect work for two Capital One Bank branches supporting the bank's focus on communities.

Each year the institute honors architects, clients and consultants who create outstanding architecture. JRS won the top award in the Mercantile/Retail category for its work on Capital One Bank's Babylon, NY, branch and a Commendation Award for designing the bank's Lakewood, NJ branch.

"Being honored for our work is especially gratifying when the recognition comes from colleagues and professional peers. This juried competition recognizes work we do to help clients achieve their visions," said John R. Sorrenti, FAIA, JRS' president.

Capital One Bank's Babylon branch is a new 4,000-square-foot, shingle-style building reflecting the region's summer homes made famous in the early 20th century. Alex Hadjiyane, JRS' senior vice president, project lead and principle in charge, led the team that used a combination of stone, copper and natural cedar shake roofing and siding to bring the bank's vision to life.

The award-winning Lakewood branch, Hadjiyane says, "was designed with both the community and environment in mind. We developed a full-bank program into a relatively small footprint." The reduced footprint is both literal at 2,400-square feet and carbon based, as JRS used Green Globe building practices. The partial two-story design, which creates a sense of space greater than the small footprint would normally allow, uses recycled metals and natural stone to create a durable, maintenance free look. Interior elements include low-flow plumbing, programmable, energy efficient heating, venting and air conditioning equipment and flooring, wall coverings and ceilings made of recycled content.

Founded in 1986, Sorrenti's firm has built a reputation for excellence and has won numerous awards while designing thousands of projects. Known for its work in creating bank branches, the firm has designed projects for American Community Bank, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Citicorp, Credit Union of New Jersey, Esquire Bank, First Fidelity, NJ Hudson City Savings Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Peapack-Gladstone Bank, Madison National Bank and many others.
